  • Welcome to Kara Johnstad School Of Voice

  • We help children, creative adults, and artists develop their voices, musicianship, creativity, and confidence — and give them the tools to express who they are. That’s what we do. Being surrounded by music, ideas, and creative people is a pretty wonderful way to spend your day.

    What makes School Of Voice special? We are an artist-driven, bilingual institute in Berlin with the voice at its heart. We believe self-expression is deeply personal and deserves to be taken seriously. Our teachers make all the difference: they are international, multilingual, highly qualified artists and educators who bring professional experience, compassion, curiosity, and a genuine love of music, people, and the voice.

  • Experience the power of voice and music, from singing to songwriting, creative writing, music, and mindfulness. Go beyond traditional music and voice studies. We offer professional training for all levels and abilities of kids, teens, and adults. Great for singers and non-singers alike.

    Dedicated professors, professional musicians, experienced artists, stage professionals, social educators, music therapists, non-medical practitioners and experts in various disciplines teach at the School Of Voice. Our regular performances are a highlight for students and teachers.

    Our studios are easy to find, centrally located in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg and Berlin-Zehlendorf, near lots of schools for on-the-way-home lessons, and only a 3-minute walk from public transportation.

    We also offer online lessons via video stream, not only for students who, due to unforeseen circumstances, can not get to their regular private lessons at our location, but increasingly to full-time online students worldwide.

    School Of Voice is a great place to meet people from the international community of Berlin, take part in holistic courses, learn a musical instrument and, not least, to benefit from the (DIY) artist development strategies of experienced mentors and professionals in the music industry.

      Our studio at Prenzlauer Berlin is located within a 3-minute walk of the S-Bahn station S Prenzlauer Allee, the U2 (Eberswalder Straße station), and the S+U Schönhauser Allee station, both just a short walk away. Multiple tram and bus lines also serve the area, ensuring easy access across the city. 

      Our Zehlendorf studios are located within a 3-minute walk of the Zehlendorf S-Bahn station (20 minutes on the S1 line from Friedrichstr., X10 express bus connections: 10 minutes to Ku`Damm).
    • 24/7 Overview in your Online Account

      YOU HAVE MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY - Holidays, bridging days, or vacation periods are not counted, and these lessons and classes remain in your account. You can cancel an upcoming appointment for free up to two days before and absences lasting several days up to 7 days in advance. This gives you ample time to plan for short vacations, business trips, family celebrations, or annual school vacations at your leisure 
    • Wander the shops, boutiques, and cafes on Teltower Damm.

      While your kids get better at playing music, you can run errands, shop or eat.
    • Near lots of schools for easy on-the-way-home lessons.

      We are near Nord-Grundschule, Freie Schule Anne-Sophie, Schadow Gymnasium, Droste-Hülshoff Schule, John F. Kennedy School, Berlin International School, and Berlin Brandenburg International School, just to name few of them.

      The ability to speak two or more languages is an essential skill in our modern global village! Bilingualism and the contact with foreign languages in the early years stimulate cognitive growth and the creative processes that all children share. Languages convey the aesthetic and values of cultures. Learning additional languages encourages International Mindedness, appreciation of other cultures and points of view, a fundamental precept of School Of Voice.

      Large, clean studios equipped with quality instruments, sheet music, artist chairs, music stands, dry-erase boards, metronomes, and computers to keep students engaged and motivated.

      We have regular recitals and other performance opportunities open to all students.

  • The Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe

    School Of Voice has been certified by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe as meeting the requirements for music-pedagogical education that properly prepares students for a professional career or for recognised examinations before public-law institutions.

    School Of Voice is also a member of the Federal Association of Independent Music Schools in Germany (Bundesverband der Freien Musikschulen – bdfm).
