Thanksgiving is around the corner and we have so much to be grateful for. Our health, our families and friends, and yes, of course music.
Many of you have shared with me that you have a dream of playing the piano, but don’t know where to begin. Some of you even spent years learning piano as a kid, but dropped it. Yet the dream persists, mixed with hesitation. You want to sit and play for hours in “flow.” Inspired. As a songwriter, I totally get you. You want piano as a path to relaxation and higher-creativity.
When I had nothing else, I had my mother and the piano. And you know what? They were all I needed.
I totally get that. That’s why our teachers at the School of Voice use a method called “pattern piano.”
Think of it like this. All children speak, giggle and tell great stories BEFORE they learn how to read and write. They are able to sing melodies and share a story way before they can read a book. Kids have been speaking for years before they start to read.
What if we played music and composed songs BEFORE learning to read?
The newest studies confirm that this to be the case. The fastest and easiest way to learn piano is to play many songs and patterns on the piano BEFORE you are asked to READ music. Yes, you feel empowered because you OWN the music. You don’t need books to be able to sit down and play. You carry the music within you. It makes sense and it works. Kids as young as 4 can start and we have one student learning to play again with 74.
Studying like this let’s kids and adults fall in love with PLAYING and composing.
In my experience, the hours of exploration and identifying “patterns” at the piano, leads not only for a love of practicing, but the reading and writing of music comes very naturally at a later point. Cool thing is, it all happens without any struggle. Why? Because music is our natural state of being.
Whether learning to play Christmas songs or the blues, pop songs writing your own songs, becoming friends with the piano is life changing and deeply nourishing.
So, if you want to take the jump, book a trial class and give it a try, Yannik, Sara and Godfrey are all here to support you on the journey. We are excited to listen to your music.
May you have the courage to persevere and stay true to your inner voice and clearest vision of how we may create a healthy and vibrant world. Stay Gold!
